Hi Zalman,

In a word... no ... I am afraid not. Nothing clever is done on the tabular views, so things like the spacing is just left to the browser, which can mean like start time get split (depending what browser you use, font size/on how wide the window is etc). The number of records displayed on a tabular view (for the paging) is controlled in the view definition.

For detail views, there is a 'two column' display mode which is used by one or two IBM supplied views but this facility is something that the view designer chooses. You could create your own using the view editor, but this would be quite a chore IMHO.

There is no WUI parameter to automatically display a single column detail view as a two column view for example (if this did exist, the results would probably look hideous, as to do it en-masse would mean there would be little / no intelligence to the arrangement).

There are existing requirements on the database for this sort of thing, but I can't comment on when/if these requirements will be fulfilled. If you haven't had been in contact with your IBM team on this issue, please encourage them to submit a requirement, or concur with the existing ones on the same issue, as that will help to give them more weight. Likewise, raising the issue at conferences like SHARE.

Now I know it doesn't help the WUI, but I'd encourage you to check out the CICS Explorer displays. If you are not happy with these, providing feedback on the beta program to the Explorer team could help to ensure that it has the displays that you want.

Cheers ... Grant.

Hi, Now that we've been forced off the EUI and onto the WUI, what I would LOVE to see is an option to decrease the white space in the rows. Take for example the CICSRGN view. Each Region uses more than twice the space it really needs. As you can see CICS start time uses the field vertically, but I'd rather see more data (more regions on a single page, and spread other fields, such as Starttime - wider).

The same is true for other views, I think there's just too much white space..

Can this be customized by us?

Thanks, in advance. Zalman.

Hello Grant,

I'm using IE 6.0. I have a couple of alternatives I use to get the output I need (including doing a select all on the print view of the WUI followed by a text to columns insert into excel - that allows me to select the data by column). I use the selected text in a variety of ways but primarily in workstation scripts.

Every so often I find myself going to select a column of data and being disappointed when I get the entire row. If I could change that about the WUI (or in this case the browser\html technology) I would...

Regards,

Asa

Hi Asa,

I think the function that you are describing is really a function of the technology used to get to the EUI or the WUI.

e.g. on the EUI you use a 3270 Terminal emulator that has a block copy, and on the WUI you use a web browser that copies all the text from the frame down and across to the end point.

What web browser are you using?

If you could get the information another way, for example a batch job, or a REXX EXEC would that be useful, e.g. to write the output to an hfs file?

What environment do the scripts run in? On the workstation, e.g. going into a spreadsheet, a REXX EXEC on MVS etc?

Cheers.. Grant.

On occasion I'm required to get a list of transactions, files, programs from the WUI that I pass along to other support areas or incorporate into a script. Unfortunately, selecting multiple rows on a view pulls in each column and this requires a clean up exercise to eliminate the extraneous fields. It would be nice if the WUI supported selecting at the column level (similar to what was provided by the EUI).

Hi Kevin,

So something like you can use on a GPS/ Satnav where you can indicate the amount of detail on the map. How would you identify the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_road#Motorways" rel="nofollow">motorways</a> from the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_road#A_roads" rel="nofollow">A</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_road#Other_classifications" rel="nofollow">B</a> roads when the "roads" we are talking about are program or file attributes?

One thing we keep talking about amongst ourselves are more role or task oriented views, e.g. views for software developers, that are different from operator or sysprog views. However different shops/users have different expectations of what these different roles require.

I also hear the point (which I don't agree with) that it is not actually important what is on the view or where it is, as long as the attribute is there somewhere. If something is not in the right place, people can edit copies of the views...

I took the WUI course about 18 months ago and we are just now starting a CICS V3.2 install (well, the systems programmers are...I'm a software development guy). I remember some of the course, but still don't have a WUI up to "play" with. Maybe an approach to consider is to have a switch for the WUI that allows different levels of detail about the views presented? So, maybe a base view and an expanded view or some such similar idea? The switch could be turned on or off from all WUI screens or a control panel maybe?

Thanks Grant, I'll give that a try! I've certainly copied the task view and chopped out loads of stuff I don't care about.

What I'd also like is this:

On the left hand side I'd like some kind of drop down list from where I could select (and go to) and installed View or Menu... so if I want to go to EYUUSTARTMVSWLM I don't have to work out where it is. I know I could create something myself, but it would be a lot nicer to have the WUI go the place where all the screens are kept (the repository?) and get it from there. It does this in the view editor so it must be vaguely possible?

Hi James,

You can do this already. Go into the User group editor and click the 'Force filter confirmation' check box. This will show the views filters for you to fill out first. This will do it for all links, which could be annoying.

On a user defined menu, or link in a view, it is possible to set this just on particular view links in the view editor: When you specify the target view in a link, there is a 'Filter confirmation' check box that can be set. This is never set for an IBM supplied view though, so it would only work on a user defined view.

As you mentioned the program view, what do you think about the contents of the PROGRAM tabular view? I always wonder if anyone really cares anout the Language any more, or the share status. I would rather see perhaps the Program Length on the tabular view.

Cheers ... Grant.

When you go to the programs view, the WUI first does a search for all programs. I want to be able to specify a filter before it does a search for all programs in all regions, For example, with my small CICSplex of 8 AORs, this takes ages before I can look at the one program I really care about.
